Hello futurists!
My name is Venessa, I'm a graduate student at The New School in NYC, pursuing an MA in Media Studies. I'm in the process of putting together a proposal to introduce an "Emergent Media & Futures Studies" curriculum into the program, and would love any guidance, feedback, or collaboration from the community here. I've been thinking a lot about how to get Futures Studies to go 'mainstream,' and I'm hoping that this project will be able to act as a template to that end. I'm envisioning a three step process at our university: 1. Begin integrating futures material into current course offerings, and roll out a series of foundational futures studies courses 2. Combine this coursework into its own Certificate program (the school offers 12 credit certificates than can be taken as part of the MA or separately by the general public) 3. Launch a MA in Futures Studies Now, it may take several years to get from step 1 to step 3, but I'm prepared for that. My main focus is how to launch step 1. I think I'm sitting at a dynamic spot here at the intersection of media and futures studies. I've looked through all the courses offered within my program, and though there are plenty that cover 'new media', there are very few that look at social technologies and study the emergent behaviors (crowdsourcing, smart mobs, mass collaboration, social mobile gaming, social change possibilities via social networking and collaborative mobile technologies, emergent democracy, etc) that are arising from them, and thinking about their social/cultural/economic impacts and implications. To me this seems like an opportunity to fill those gaps. (cont. below)

Peter and Kay, I watched the UH ceremony yesterday, May 1, 2009, and really enjoyed hearing the history of the program, by the various faculty, including Jib Fowles, Chris Dede and Oliver Markley. I enjoyed hearing Markley share how the program transitioned from a liberal arts exploration of the future, to a program preparing foresight professionals, and sharing how various threads of your curriculum came together, such as forecasting, social change, and systems thinking. Keep up the good work.

As a program director of an M.A. in Strategic Foresight, I am wondering if anyone would like to talk about program improvement? I recently had dinner with Peter Bishop and we talked about this. I've also had brief email exchanges on this with Sohail Inatuyallah. This past nine months at Regent I have had to:
1. evaluate ourselves for SACS, a third accreditation affirmation and demonstrate integration into our MSF of our our new improvement program on globalization. http://www.regent.edu/academics/ruglobal/ 2 evaluate and upgrade all online courseware based on the Quality Matters rubric, http://www.qualitymatters.org/ 3. map our alignment with our university's overall strategic plan and institutional evaluation program through outcome based planning at the school, program and course level, and establish reporting systems. 4. continue implementation of our after-action reports for course improvement based on student feedback and make improvements in our alumni/networking program. Graduate education iss increasing moving to outcome based assessments. People want to know the competencies of your graduates beyond their transcript, and whether you are delivering this for the workforce. What are you doing as a program director in planning and evaluation? What help do you need to turn your degree into a competencies based program.

Every year I choose a theory, or thinker of foresight with whom I intentionally think. This past year I have intentionally thought about intention qua intention. Those thinkers who have shaped my lived experience include Linda McTagger.t (The Field) and William Tiller. This process has revolutionized every thing I have done in my practice as both a teacher and administrator. The focal point of my intention aims to enlighten students' understandings of what I currently refer to as our "unified mind." Along the lines of futures, foresight education and intention I would love to be engaged with others in this trope. Thusly, as for the aforementioned name search, I would offer "Intentional Futures, Creation and Studies."

sorry, but I have to ask. Is the discussion about "standards & curriculum" premature? A question that has been nagging me is this: is there a "future to foresight education" as a distinct discipline in the US? Those associated with the legacy programs, U of Houston & U of Hawaii, are-(no offense intended) aging. Assuming their retirement in the near future, are there sufficient "academically qualified," in the sense of University expectations, full-time professionals in the ranks to carry the mission forward, let alone propagate?

It is more and more important to entroduce peace education with foresight education. Much has been done in peace education and some people hav econnected to foresight but it is important that pece be part of foresight education as foresight in any subject is linked to possible futures of conflict as well as peace

I composed and taught this course ...
(taught f2f, also with full-service Bb-Vista support shell ... where I can accept adjunct faculty ... ) with three thematic objectives: i. exercises in getting acquainted with one another, with the 'university' and with ways of thinking about the future, ii. factors in history / anthropology that focus/ 'forecast' a 'narrower' range of alternative futures, and iii. the Ethnographic Futures Research (R.Textor) strategy for eliciting how members of a (sub-)culture think about futures. (The results were kind of (devastatingly) amazing! Simplistically: Phx suburbia pasted onto 2038 !) I now have my first round results ( my own experiences and the students' feedback, of this trial version, which I'll be revising between now and ... beginning Jan 9( ?) I'll welcome all your queries and comments ... on any aspect(s) of this pilot voyage. Also your ante'ing up your own syllabai, lesson plans, and actual teaching experiences !!! Reed * I intend to add a "web-search" assignment - 1ph review @ 3 websites per week - with a rich and interactive 'menu' of "futures resources" provided in course shell, but not restricted to that. to be able to tech future thinking and future approaches or even methods you have to understand how the future is viewed in different cultures. As an example in many African cultures the future of future generations is as important as the remembrance of past generations. there are no breakages in generations

A Little Help From My Friends… the next step for the WFS Futures Learning Section
For 2-3 years several of us have been methodically moving toward the reemergence of the Futures Learning Section in the World Future Society. In essence this group would provide a rallying point for foresight and futures learning of all kinds (academia, corporate, community, etc) as a special interest group in the WFS. This is a subset of a variety of current ventures an should not be redundant. We have – 1. A group of self-proclaimed interested people. 2. General support (moral support, no money) from WFS. 3. Connections with the Foresight Education Project (Peter Bishop and Kay Strong), John Strong (Accelerated change), David Stein (Futurtakes). I see several functions that this node of activity could provide. But, before I bias this, I’d like your thoughts. What functions, purposes could a WFS Learning Section Provide? One continuing tension in global futures studies/foresight education has been the challenge of an apparent lack of comparable curriculum and standards. Some argue this is just fine; others are concerned about building a coherent "discipline" if there is not enough commonality. Is there?
For example, the two "UH" programs take very different approaches and have very different emphases. Is there enough shared curriculum across programs (i.e., Turku, Tamkang, Swinburne, UHx2, etc.) to map the commonalities or does that actually do a disservice to the eclectic nature of the field? I am developing an undergraduate foresight unit which is focussing on technology. I have had a look at the current available resources and just wanted to ask in anyone had any multimedia - preferably web based - techno fantastic material? I am going to mine Stuart Candy's blog - thanks Stuart! - for images, and I have TED videos, but is there anything else that you think the undergrads would think was great.
I want to focus on the assumed futures that technology illustrates, as well as the emancipatory aspect of it. At this stage, I am still deciding on the framework I'll use up front. Thanks in advance Rowena
